onHow to remove and replace the ignition lock found on a 1999-2001 Dodge Ram Pickup, 1998-2003 Dodge Ramcharger, 1998-2000 Dodge Dakota Pickup and 1998-2000 Dodge Durango.
We used a 1999 Dodge Ram Sport 1500 to illustrate how to replace the ignition lock. This same ignition lock is used on the 1998-2001 Dodge Ram Pickups, 1998-2000 Dodge Dakota Pickup, 1998-2003 Dodge Ramcharger and 1998-2000 Dodge Durango. All replacement cylinders can be found at carlocksandkeys.com.
All locks for the above vehicles purchased at carlocksandkeys.com come keyed with two working keys. The keys that come with the new ignition lock can't be used to open your cars door locks. This will require the buyer to have two sets of keys, one for the ignition lock and one for the door locks. We do offer the service of rekeying the lock to fit your existing key, and this requires sending your working key to us, so that we can decode the key and rekey the lock to work with your key. Please contact us for more information on car lock or motorcycle lock rekeys.
- The ignition lock is connected and
held into place on the steering column using an active retainer pin. To
remove the ignition lock, the active pin must be depressed so the ignition
lock can be pulled out of the column. The ignition lock must be in the ON
position otherwise the active retainer pin cannot be depressed. If you
lost all your car keys, than the lock must be either picked by a locksmith
or the wafers drilled out so that the lock can be turned to the ON
position. To get to the active retainer pin you must remove the plastic
shroud that covers the steering column, which in held in place by a few
screws.
- Once the plastic column shroud is
removed you will see the lock and the electrical switch. The lock is
attached the electrical switch and the switch must be removed to depress
the locks active retainer and release the lock. The switch is held into
place by three screw which are clearly seen in the photo.
- Once the switch and lock are
removed from the column the active retainer will be visible and is pointed
to by the arrow in the picture below. Turn the lock to the ON position and
depress the active retainer and at the same time pull on the lock to
release it from the switch.
- Here is a picture of the lock
removed. To install the new lock simply reverse the above procedure.
