The famous Honda Rebel CMX250 was manufactured from 1986 to 2016. Honda also manufactured a Rebel CMX450 in 1986 and 1987. Both motorcycles have a key code stamped on the ignition lock, but you need to remove the lock to see it. They may also have a key code on the gas cap lock and helment lock, but they also need to be removed to see it. The first photo shows a 2012 Honda Rebel CMX250. The second and third photos show the key code stamped on the electrical switch that comes off when the ignition lock is removed, and the key code is also stamped on the ignition lock where the bolt comes out to lock the steering. The key code is the last three characters of the six character string shown in the photos. The key code is C20.

I believe you will always find a key code on the ignition lock, but you must remove the lock to see the key code. This is true for any lock your working with on a Honda VTX motorcycle including the gas cap lock. The easiest lock to check is the gas cap lock, but it requires a key to remove the lock. The key code is stamped on the side or bottom of the gas cap lock.

Key codes for the Honda VTX models will start with the letter A, B, C or D, followed by two numbers.

Key codes are located on one or more locks on a Honda Magna motorcycle, but the code is usually hidden, so you need to remove the lock to see the key code. The key code may also be stamped on the original key, or printed on a key tag included with the original keys. But you probably don't have the original key or the key tag, which is why your reading this blog post.

Honda Magna key codes will start with the letter A, B, C or D, followed by two numbers. Example: A25 is a Honda key code. The only exception to this rule is for 1982 and 1983 Honda Magna models. For those years the key code will be three numbers. Example: 413 is a Honda key code.

The following photograph shows a 1985 Honda Magna key code found on the helmet lock. The lock was removed to see the key code. The key code is D64. Notice how the key code is the last three characters of a six character string. There is a space between the first three characters and the last three, but this isn't always the case and you need to be able to recognize the key code part of this string.

Contact us if you have any questions.

Many Harley Davidson motorcycles use tubular locks and keys, and have since 1993. Tubular locks are called tubular because the pins used in the lock are lined up around a circle, and the key blade inserted into the lock to operate the lock is round to match the location of the pins. Each lock contains 7 pins with 7 cuts in the key. There are 7 different pin lengths used in Harley Davidson tubular locks with 7 possible cut depths for each cut in the key. Knowing which cut to use in each position on the key can be difficult for Harley Davidson owners because only Harley Davidson can decode their tubular lock key codes.

The easiest way for a Harley Davidson owner to get a replacement tubular key in a all-keys-lost situation is to take your key code to a Harley Davidson dealership and get a new key from them. Locksmiths and key shops can't decode Harley Davidson key codes because the Motor Co. won't make their key code information public. However, there is a work around.

Accessory locks used on Harley Davidson motorcycles such as the saddle bags can be easily removed, disassembled, and the lock pin lengths recorded for each pin in the lock. With this information you can determine the depth for each cut in the key, and any locksmith or key shop that cuts tubular keys can use this information to make a key for you. See video.

One thing a Harley Davidson owner can do to protect themselves from a all-keys-lost situation to have your tubular key duplicated, and those keys stored in a safe place. This can save you a headache if you do, in fact, lose your keys.

Not every motorcycle will have a key code stamped on the locks, or anywhere else on the motorcycle, so what do you do if can't find a key code? Here are a few options:

1) If your motorcycle is only a few years old, you can try contacting your local motorcycle dealership and see if they can find the key code using the VIN. However, the older the motorcycle is the less likely your dealership has that information.

2) Check the owners manual to see if a previous owner wrote the key code in the manual.

If all these options fail, there is still hope. We can make a key for most Japanese and American motorcycles and scooters by using the ignition lock, but it does require removing the lock from the vehicle and shipping it to us. We can make a key for your motorcycle at a greatly reduced cost even after adding in return shipping, so check with us first before having the work done locally. Turn over time is usually 1 business days. Contact us at: Contact Us
